Bicarbonates
Why this test?
This test is an important indicator of electrolyte dispersion and anion deficiency.
The determination of bicarbonate together with the determination of pH is used in the diagnosis and treatment of various disorders associated with acid-alkaline imbalance of the respiratory and metabolic systems.
In what cases is it prescribed?
In case of acid-base disturbances – metabolic alkalosis, metabolic acidosis, chronic renal failure, diabetic acidosis, respiratory alkalosis.
Test information
This is one of the main indicators of the acid-alkaline balance of the blood and an indicator of the buffer system of the blood, which regulates the constancy of the pH of the blood. The bicarbonate buffer system of the blood is one of the powerful controlled systems of the extracellular fluid of the blood.
Compounds that prevent sudden changes in the concentration of hydrogen ions are called buffer systems. The bicarbonate buffer accounts for about 10% of the entire blood buffer capacity (there are also phosphate and protein, including hemoglobin buffer systems).
The main role of the bicarbonate buffer is due to the participation of its components in biochemical reactions, physiological functions that lead to the stabilization of blood pH, related to the work of the kidneys and lungs. The applied research method allows determining the content of HCO3-(HCO3-bicarbonate ion) ions in the blood.
