Test information
Pancreatic elastase in stool is a laboratory test that allows you to determine how active the human pancreas is in terms of the production of digestive enzymes. Elastase is one of the components of pancreatic juice. Estimating its amount in stool is a quick, simple and painless way for the patient to understand how fully the pancreas performs its exocrine function. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is observed in patients with diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, gallstone disease, cystic fibrosis, osteoporosis, and autoimmune pathologies. Its development is also possible after removal of the gallbladder or due to age-related changes in the pancreas. Early diagnosis of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency allows to prevent the development of serious metabolism problems.
